Garfield an active member of a Lutheran church in Missouri. He studied medical laboratory technology and electrical engineering as an undergraduate and remains especially grateful for the mathematics training, which he believes sharpened his thinking. He has long been fascinated by the relationships among time, human free will, and the Genesis creation account, while maintaining a strong preference for clarity over philosophical abstraction.
